THE COLLABORATIVE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM BETWEEN TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER EL PASO (TTUHSC EL PASO) AND UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE PHAM NGOC THACH (UPNT)

OVERVIEW

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso) is the only health sciences center along the U.S. – Mexico border. TTUHSC El Paso provides a safe learning environment for students of all levels, which is based on evidence – based medicine and objective assessment, to offer students life-like experiences prior to actual clinical cases.

It is the fourth university in the Texas Tech University System and is comprised of four school: the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing, the Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The Paul L. Foster School of Medicine is the only medical school on the U.S. – Mexico border. Unlike a traditional medical school, which requires students to wait until their third year of studies before they are introduced to the clinical sciences, students at the Foster School of Medicine are immersed to the basic and clinical sciences in their first year through integrated education program. A qualified Clinical Simulation Center is required to put that into practice.

The Training and Educational Center for Healthcare Simulation (TECHS) on the campus of TTUHSC El Paso was created in February 2019 as a program expansion from the Gayle Greve Hunt School of Nursing (GGHSON) simulation program, the Center for Advanced Teaching and Assessment in Clinical Simulation (ATACS), and the Regional Simulation and Training Center. ATACS was accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) many times. Professor Hoi Ho, M.D., was the Director of ATACS from its inception until his retirement.

Dr. Richard A. Lange, M.D., M.B.A., is the President of TTUHSC El Paso and Dean of the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine. Two Vietnamese American Experts, Professor Hoi Ho, M.D. and Tuyen K. Ho, Pharm.D., BCPS, connected and paved the way for the cooperation between TTUHSC El Paso and UPNT. They have made great contributions to the success of the cooperation. With their help, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between TTUHSC El Paso and UPNT was signed on January 12th, 2017 at UPNT.
